Arch1101 Frist Task

A. My best piece of creative work

It is a sculpture model which I did for my foundation final project. Its name is Siren designed for making coastline become beautiful and meaningful. The theme of Siren is a potential danger. In Greek mythology, the Siren is a mermaid who always sits on a rock and sings a song to attract sailor and then kill them. Rhythm is used to create the structure of fishtail. The interesting thing is that because I do not how to create the body of Siren, I just create a fishtail which actually looks like a prawn tail to replace it.

B: an image of a great piece of architecture

It is Harry and Penelope Seidler House. Harry Seidler is well known for his import of European modernist principles to Australia. In this house situated in Sydney’s northern suburbs. he explores a soft brutalist language in the context of an Australian bush landscape. The interesting things about Harry and Penelope Seidler House are that wooden material should be the best choice to unify with the forest environment, but Harry makes cement building nice harmonious with the environment.

C: an original photograph of something beautiful

It is called Jongerius Vase which was designed by Dutch designer Hella Jongerius. Jongerius believes that design for essential rather than decorative is important and that good design should be sustainable. This is reflected in Jongerius’s design approach trying to reduce waste through following the ideals of long-termism. She said that design should include functionality and be symbolic, which should be sophisticated and should reflect society. The interesting thing about Jongerius Vase is that Jongerius claim she reducing waste, but in my opinion, she is creating waste. Because Jongerius Vase is made of leather, it does not have even basic function.
